Covid-19 Help Fund

Overview of the Covid-19 Crisis in Nepal (Spring 2021)

In late spring of 2021, Nepal was severely affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with many localities facing an unfolding crisis. The rapid spread of the virus overwhelmed hospitals and led to a critical shortage of medical oxygen, resulting in preventable deaths. During this time of need, the Tharus and Friends Association (TFA) took swift action to address the emergency by launching fundraising campaigns to support relief efforts.

First Fundraising Effort: Support from Santa Fe, New Mexico

The first initiative was organized by Tharus residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This community raised $1,551, which was donated on behalf of the Tharus and Friends Association to the Hamar Foundation in western Nepal on May 15, 2021. At the time, western Nepal was experiencing the peak of the Covid-19 crisis, particularly due to the shortage of oxygen supplies. The Hamar Foundation, in collaboration with Humanity Foundation Nepal, responded by establishing an Oxygen Cylinder Bank in Dhangadhi, stocking 244 cylinders. Oxygen cylinders were distributed free of charge to hospitals and individuals in urgent need. TFA expresses its sincere gratitude to all donors, especially the Tharus of Santa Fe, for their leadership and generosity that helped save many lives during this difficult period.

Second Fundraising Effort: Global Collaboration and Distribution

The second effort was led by the TFA executive committee and involved a broader base of support. Friends and well-wishers of TFA from the USA, Canada, Singapore, and Nepal came together once again, donating generously. Through these collective efforts, TFA raised a total of $3,664.97 in June 2021. After carefully evaluating proposals and requests, TFA decided to allocate funds to four organizations, providing each with NRs. 100,000.00 to implement Covid-19 relief activities. The organizations supported were:

  1. Backward Society Education (BASE), Western Nepal
  2. Khadag Municipality Ward No. 6, Saptari District
  3. Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha (TKS) Central Office, Kathmandu
  4. Tharu Mahila Sabha, Bara and Siraha Districts

Through these targeted efforts, TFA and its network of supporters were able to provide critical assistance during one of the most challenging periods of the pandemic in Nepal.
